I have never heard of bitter khmer leaves. What would make a good substitute? Do you leave this undressed or add some sort of salad dressing?

      J.S.Matthew 9 months ago

Rinsed and Sliced Sorrel Leaves can be substituted. This is generally eaten as is without dressing because the herbs and spices take care of adding flavor. You could however use one of these dipping sauces: http://jsmatthew.hubpages.com/hub/Simple-Authentic

Most often this is a side dish and is accompanied by a main course of roasted or grilled meat. Great question! Thanks for the comment!

Thanks! Will look for the sorrel leaves if we cannot find the khmer leaves. Maybe some Oriental markets sell the latter.

Most or almost all of the Ingredients can be found in large supermarkets and especially in Asian Specialty Stores. Check out the most commonly used Ingredients in Southeast Asian Cuisine: http://jsmatthew.hubpages.com/hub/Khmer-Cambodian-

There is a chart and if you look to the right column you will see what can be used as a substitute for certain ingredients. Thanks for coming back and re-commenting! I appreciate it!

With a recipe like that you will never get bored because you would never make it the same. It sounds wonderful because I like greens that have a little more punch to them rather than just sitting there on the plate needing to be covered with dressing to have any flavor.

@homesteadbound: It's true, there are many combinations to this recipe. Usually it depends on whatever you have available. Thanks for the comment!

Though I'm not sure about some of the ingredients such as Jicama and Bitter Khmer Leaves, I want to try this. How does it taste when I do not use all the ingredients?

      J.S.Matthew 8 months ago

      Hi Vinaya!

I'm not sure if this will help, but here is a Wikipedia link explaining Jicama: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jicama

Unfortunately, I can not find anything on Bitter Khmer Leaves as they are exclusive to that region. What I can tell you is that they are very, very bitter! Perhaps if you like bitter taste you can find something to add! Let me know how you make out!
