Can You Really Make Money by Publishing Articles on HubPages?

This is one of the most frequently asked questions by New Hubbers and people who are considering Joining HubPages.

This Hub Article will discuss the several Affiliate Programs offered on HubPages and how to set them up to make money.

We will discuss the HubPages Earnings Program, eBay and Amazon Affiliate Programs and Google Adsense and how to Effectively Use each program to your benefit.

Please keep in mind that HubPages is not a "Get Rich Quick Scheme!" Making money happens with experience over time. A lot of research and effort must be made before most people start making any money. Save yourself some time and effort by doing your research!

Money Making Check List:

  • Have I signed up for and been accepted in the various Earnings Programs?
  • Do I Write Quality Content?
  • Do I Share My Work Socially?

Who are the Monetization Partners on HubPages?

The Monetization Partners on HubPages are the companies that HubPages has made agreements with to allow ads to appear on our site in exchange for revenue.

The way it works is that Hubbers create individual Hub Articles and Ads are placed on the Hubs. When people click on the Ads in our Hub Articles, we get a share of the cost paid by the Advertiser. It may seem complicated at first, but it really isn't!

**Read This Important Message!**

Never Click On Your Own Ads!

Doing so is considered "Ad Fraud" and is a violation of HubPages' Terms of Use and also violates Google and the other Affiliate Program rules. If you click on your own ads you risk being Banned from HubPages and Google AdSense for Life! The same rule applies for clicking on other Hubbers' Hub Ads indiscriminately, or having people outside of HubPages go to your Hubs and click on your ads repetitively. Your IP Address is associated with each ad that you click. Be A Responsible Advertiser!

The HubPages Earnings Program

The HubPages Earnings Program is a combination of several Advertising programs combined into one. This program is fairly new and many Hubbers have experienced great monetary results. Having all these programs in one place is great because it allows for faster earnings and one Single Payout.

  • The Earnings Threshold for the HubPages Earnings Program is $50.00 (USD) meaning that you have to earn at least that amount during a pay period to get paid.
  • Payments are sent on the 28th of each month via PayPal.

It can be a little confusing to understand the HubPages Earnings Program because there are actually 2 Amazon and 2 eBay programs that are currently running. The Amazon Associates Program is the older of the two Amazon Ad Programs and at one time stood alone as it's own entity. It is worthy to note that sometime in the future this program will be added to the HubPages Earnings Program and will no longer stand as a separate program.

eBay is now part of the HubPages Earnings Program as well. This is great for Hubbers because about 3 years ago eBay stopped accepting applications to it's Affiliate Advertising Program. Now Hubbers who are enrolled in the HubPages Earnings Program can benefit from having eBay Ads in their Hub Articles!

Any Hubber that has been successfully accepted into the HubPages Earnings Program can now earn from both eBay and Amazon without signing up for additional affiliation.

Using Amazon For Targeted Advertising

Amazon offers an Affiliate Program that Hubbers can use to pinpoint ads to what they are describing in their Hubs. Although the Amazon Affiliate Program is scheduled to be phased out of HubPages as it's own entity, Hub Authors can still earn through Amazon Ads as they are included as part of the HubPages Earnings Program.

Amazon Ads can be strategically placed within your Hub Articles. When you are writing about a specific product such as a book, you can place an Ad next to the text. Chances are that if someone from a search engine query read your article, they may be looking for the product you are writing about, and they can purchase the item right through your page.

The eBay Program: Utilize "Real Time Bidding"!

The eBay Program is a great way to utilize "RTB" or "Real Time Bidding" where users can bid for items right off of your page!

"RTB" is a relatively new concept and is growing in popularity fast! Imagine that you are searching for information on a product...say, an iPhone. You go to Google, Bing or one of the giant search engines and you click on a link from the results.

You happened to click on a HubPage Article that gives a great review of the iPhone model you are interested in buying. You read the review and then you notice something on the page. You can Bid right there, right now for a brand new (or used if you prefer) iPhone and have the opportunity at getting a great deal.

How We Make Money on HubPages Using The Ad Programs

Now that we understand the basics of each Ad Program let's look at how the Ads make us money.

We get paid when people click on the Ads in our Hubs. If you haven't already, read the "Important Message" above regarding Ad Fraud. Remember, you should never click on your own Ads!

For Ads to be effective we should focus on properly placing Ads from the multiple programs available. For the record, AdSense and HubPages Ads are placed by HubPages and we can not change their position on the page. We can however place Amazon and eBay Ads wherever we like!

Now that we are talking specifically about Amazon and eBay Ads, let's explore how to place them and use them effectively in our Hub articles. When writing an article you should supply relevant Ads within the context of the article. Using random or irrelevant ads will not get many clicks.

For example, if you are writing a Recipe Hub consider placing Ads related to food, cookbooks, cookware, etc. If you are writing "How To" Hub Articles, you might want to add Ads to books or tools that will be needed to get the job done.

Whatever you write about be sure to make the Ads in your Hub relate to the context of the Article. If someone finds your Hub Article when they are searching on a Search Engine like Google then chances are they are looking for a product. Why not advertise related products so they can make a purchase right from your page?

Here Are A Few Things To Consider:

  • Remember to never click your Ads!
  • Make Sure Your Ads Look Clean
  • Don't use too many Ads or your article may look like Spam!
  • Associate the Ads with the Topic of your Article

To break it down think like this:

  1. We write Articles and Place Ads in them.
  2. We get paid when people click on our Ads.
  3. The Better the Quality of our Articles, the more Traffic we get.
  4. The more traffic we get, the more Ad Clicks we receive, we make more money!

The bottom line to making any money on HubPages is having Patience! You need to write Quality Hubs on topics that people are searching for on Search Engines. You need to write consistently, and over time you will start to see the rewards of your hard work.

This is an online business and like all businesses there are risks and rewards. If you do your research, pay attention to quality, and keep producing Hubs that get traffic, you will be earning in no time!
