What Is The Holy Spirit About: Teachings of the Catholic Church Seven Sacraments: Fruits and Gifts
83What Is The Holy Trinity?
Since God is omnipotent and all-powerful, He is more complex than humans can understand. Catholics recognize three parts of God; God the Father the God-head, Jesus His son, and the Holy Spirit. All three of these "God parts" make up what Catholics refer to as the “Holy Trinity".
I would like to point out, however, that many non-Catholic Christians challenge the concept of the Holy Trinity as it is not directly mentioned in the Bible. However, to Catholic believers, believing in the Holy Trinity makes sense! There is no denying that there is God the Father, Jesus Christ the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The best way to explain how all three of these persons represent one God is through the concept of the Holy Trinity.
The Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit is the essence of God. The Holy Spirit of God is what empowers Christian believers. The Holy Spirit dwells in all Christians who have been baptized in the name of Jesus. When called upon, the Holy Spirit can enlighten, strengthen, and help those who ask for. It is accepted that the authors of the books in the Bible were filled with the Holy Spirit, and therefore, produced the True Word of God.
The Holy Spirit is often shown through symbols. The most common symbols are the white dove, and fire. The dove can represent freedom and beauty, and fire can represent power, strength, and consumption. Since the Holy Spirit is a part of God, it is everywhere. It is in all mankind and can awaken faith. It enables communication with Christ, grants gifts to all, and helps men grow in spiritual freedom. The Holy Spirit reveals God through the written word as a source of inspiration.
The Holy Spirit is regarded as the source of all holiness, and brings about the unity of the church as it directs and supports the church, and the liturgy of the Church. Jesus was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and was born of the Virgin Mary.
Baptism is a new birth in God the Father, through his Son, and in the Holy Spirit. It is impossible to know Jesus without the Spirit. The Holy Spirit awakens us in faith and provides a grace within us. Although the Holy Spirit has always been in existence, it is the last part of the Trinity to be revealed. The Holy Spirit was truly revealed after the resurrection of Christ.
Confirmation,: The Gifts and Fruits of the Holy Spirit
If you are following this article in the series, then you may be aware of the Sacrament of Confirmation as one of the Sacraments of Initiation. Please follow the link to learn more on this subject. In short, Confirmation is like a continuation of baptism. As the candidate making their confirmation is (figuratively) old enough to decide on whether or not they want to continue in the Catholic Faith, becoming confirmed, literally, seals the person with the Holy Spirit.
There are Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit. These are wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord.
There are also Twelve Fruits of the Holy Spirit, which are charity, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, generosity, gentleness, faithfulness, modesty, self-control, and chastity. When one becomes confirmed they are sealed with these gifts and fruits.

So glad to see there is still faith out there. Beautiful hub, I loved it!
Another solid informative hub....keep it up.
Great Hub, I've forgotten half of this from my youth. Voted up.
When I was confirmed at the age of 14, I was told that I was now a soldier of Jesus Christ. I also remember taking on a confirmation name.
I was confirmed an Anglican at a Catholic Convent School, when I was certainly a Hells Angel. Now I love exploring the similarities and the essence of truth in all beliefs. The Hindu's believe that God is everywhere present, and in order for the human mind to grasp even a small understanding, they break down the various aspects of God's qualities into 'Dieties'. The more I learn the more I discover that the the words and terms may be different, but the essence has a common thread. Loved your article.
A great detailed explanation that is yet easy to read and understand. Nicely done.
Easy to understand and nicely written information. Thanks JS!
What a great article. I grew up in the Catholic Church until I was around nine. I stopped believing in God around ten or so. Because I wasn’t comfortable in hearing about what the priests were doing to young boys. This made me turn away from that religion. Then at fourteen, I was once again re introduced to him. And I later said the sinner’s prayer and life for me began to get so much better. I realized at some point in my teen age years, that if we as Christians are to pray to Mary, the mother of Christ. Then this negates the whole concept of why Jesus had to die for our sins. It clearly says in the bible that the only way to get to the father is through Jesus. The whole middle place, purgatory concept is out the window as well. If this were the case, then it again, negates Jesus shedding his precious blood, and suffering. I feel that the Holy Spirit revealed this truth to me. I don’t consider myself a “denomination” of Catholic, Baptist, and ect. I want to be considered a child of God. And when folks read what I have to share, or when they see me. I want them to see Jesus. I think this is what is important. To be so close to him in the relationship, that you become one, in mind and spirit. Great article! Peace be with you
Thanks for the information! I so badly need this.
Hello, my friend. I made a hub and spoke of her amazing series on Catholicism in it. See if you like. Cheers!
I disagree with your assumption that non-Catholics don`t believe in the Trinity. All genuine Bible believing Followers of Christ believe in the Trinity. Plus you state that the Holy Spirit was the last part of God to be revealed but that is incorrect because He is revealed right in the very begining of the Holy Scriptures.(read Genesis 1:2).
God bless.
Thanks for the hub am a devout catholic and found the hub very informative
wow, i liked this. thankyou for sharing it. and thank you for the comment and follow.
I was brought up in Catholic Ireland and as children we were brought up with stories from the bible and of the saints. I was always impressed by the story of how St Patrick had explained the Trinity, not in words but with the shamrock. Thank you.
Hey JS
Well written and a good explanation of Catholic beliefs. It's easy to forget what we learned in Catechism about the foundations of our faith. I' will refresh my memory with your series
Thanx for this
Lee
A friend told me about the baptism of the Holy Spirit while I was at prep school... I searched the scriptures and read a book about it and asked God for it and stepped out on my own speaking in tongues all by my lonesome in the 12th grade. Christ seems so much more real to me since that time and I open myself to him every day and also... thank you so much for following my hubs it meant a lot to me especially that you're an elite!
I am not religious but the concept of true Christianity seems a good one that teaches people will be rewarded for doing good in this world no matter what their religion is. I was impressed by the new Catholic Pope who gave a speech about the need for tolerance of religions. I have also found catholics to be more tolerant and less judgemental of others compared to other offshoot christian sects.
I think that those christian sects won't listen because they think it is their job to save others from hell. I like your ideas on this point because it teaches people what Jesus taught when he spoke about the good samaritan.
I believe that the man who was beaten and robbed was already in some kind of hell and so many people are living in some kind of hell already and they don't need to be pushed further into hell.
I wish you all the luck with your family and friends. May the force be with you all!
Your Hubs are very useful and awesome.I really enjoyed it.Thanks for sharing about The Teachings of Catholic Church Seven Sacraments.Voted up all Hubs JS Matthew
I agree with you God is three and one at the same time. God the Father, God the Son and God the Spirit are three distinct persons with a single essense. The Holy Spirit can be grieved and blasphemed. This points to His personhood. Jesus Himself walked in the power of the Spirit after His temptation in the desert. The Holy spirit always glorifies Jesus. Being filled with the spirit transform the 120 believers at pentacost from defeated cowards to world shakers.
I was taught a prayer as a child by nuns which I have never forgotten.
Hail Mary, Mother of God
Blessed art Thou amongst women
Blessed is the fruit of Thy womb Jesus
Holy Mary Mother of God
Pray for our sinners
Now and at the hour of death
Amen.
I like this prayer and I respect catholic nuns for teaching it to me. Maybe one day I will fully understand it. I hope so!
I will stop commenting here now and wish you the best in everything you do!
I just joined Hub Pages so I am a little late reading your hub on the Holy Spirit. To be indwelt by the Spirit of God is one of His greatest expressions of grace to me. I cannot fathom a love so deep, so wide, so unconditional as His.I was wondering if you believe the catholic church is the only church, and salvation, or rebirth can only take place in the Catholic Church. Personally, though the Church is God's plan, I do not think God is restricted to any denomination - He is to big for that.
I really appreciate how you handled this topic. It's not easy to write about nor easily understood but you did a great job clarifying from a Biblical point of view. Thanks.
