Life and Death; Difficult Choices
* As a disclaimer, I believe that everyone is equal and should have the same access to basic needs such as health care, economic equality, etc.
Furthermore, these are my personal opinions and I do not judge anyone, wish harm to, or desire to insult anyone; I am merely writing my opinion in hopes of connecting with others of similar and different beliefs.
Also, I have been forced to remove a certain word that begins with "A" so I am simply replacing that "A" word with the phrase: [Legal Baby Killing] *

Should The Dying Be Able To Choose To End Their Own Life?
See results without votingIn 1992 my grandfather was brutally murdered. He was beaten to death by 3 so called "friends" of his (they used his own golf club that he tried to defend himself with and they robbed him of what little money he had laying around). He was so severely beaten that at the wake they had a closed casket. At the end of his viewing, we, the immediate family, were given the chance to see him one last time. When they opened the casket there was a smell that I will never forget; the mingling of flowers, chemicals, and death. At the time I was a 15 year old freshman in high school. This was a memory that remains with me to this very day.
My grandfather (my Dad's Dad) was not the greatest fellow. He drank a lot, enjoyed prostitutes, and hung around with shady people. Regardless of his bad choices, no one should have to go through what he went through. The reason for the closed casket at the viewing was because his face was so badly disfigured; he didn't even look like my grandfather. The embalmer had to remove most of his facial bones, just to make him look "presentable". Needless to say, he got a hell of a beating.
I was born on January 22, 1978. The way that I came to this earth was by no means a planned event. Ironically, my birthday falls on the anniversary of "Roe vs. Wade" [Roe v. Wade , 410 U.S. 113 (1973)] the landmark [Legal Baby Killing ] case. I am glad that my parents chose to keep me!
Here's something that bothers me: if a person abuses a child, the public turns into a lynch mob . But if a woman wants to kill her baby, then it's OK and no big deal, you'll never hear about it on the news-unless it involves a person who shoots staff workers at a [Legal Baby Killing] clinic. If a woman is pregnant and she has a sonogram, she sees the very early signs of the living child within her developing, but months later she can terminate that life?
Let's face it; if it is made of cells then it is alive. Didn't we learn that in Middle School ?
The point that I am trying to make regarding the tragedy of my Grandfather, is that even though I was very angry for what they did to him, I did not want them to suffer the Death Penalty. Even though In MA there is no such law, I would have voted against it if they asked me about if I wanted that to be their justice. In short, I am Pro-Life and that doesn't only include the topic of [Legal Baby Killing] but it extends to Capital Punishment as well.
To be totally honest, I am on the fence regarding "Assisted Suicide", "Mercy Killing" or "Euthanasia". I know that this contradicts my pro-life stance, but I do have empathy for people who are truly suffering and where death in in the very near future. I really am unsure of my feelings towards that.
For the record, I lost a grandfather, a grandmother, and a very young aunt (she was only 54) to cancer. I know how they suffered and at first they had hope, but towards the end, they knew death was inevitable. I Know that none of them wanted to die, and they all fought until the end but I know that there are many people out there whose life is a constant battle of pain.
Why is it that we can Electrocute or Lethally Inject Someone, Murder Babies (by "sucking their dismembered bodies from the mother's womb, a few short months of birth") but some one who has lived a full life and whose daily existence is constant pain and suffering, can't choose to go out peacefully?
This really troubles me. Where are our morals? Where is the "line" between right and wrong? If I accidentally killed someone in a car crash, I will go to jail for vehicular homicide, but anyone can kill their baby without a second thought. In many states, girls as young as 12 years old can have a [Legal Baby Killing] without their parent's knowledge or consent. You have to be 18 to vote or die for your country, 21 to drink & gamble, but there is no limit on age regarding [Legal Baby Killing].
Something I find amusing is that if a person who unsuccessful tries to commit suicide but lives, can actually be prosecuted in the court of law! Now I can't imagine what goes through a persons mind when they want to kill themselves. There are so many reasons that people commit suicide that I can't even begin to list them here.
To be honest, I don't know what to say other than I feel bad for the person who feels that low, and even worse for their family. I have never had to go through the pain of losing someone to this avoidable death, and I pray that I never have to. For anyone who has experienced the loss of a loved one, I pray that they find peace.
These are my views and I am sure that some people will agree and others will disagree with me. Please join me in this discussion by leaving a comment and taking the polls I have posted below. I am grateful to anyone who joins this discussion.

Very interesting hub and very important topic of discussion. I think that mothers should be never allowed to kill unborn babies, especially if babies are healthy and there are no serious problems. Each child is a present and we shouldn't refuse from such great presents. As to capital punishment, I also vote "no", I don't support this idea.
Very good Hub, very interesting and controversial topics. Most people either feel very strongly one way or the other about these things, I agree with you in part and disagree in part as well which is probably not surprising as everyone has their own views, I completely agree with you on the [legal baby killings] and assisted suicides. I do however think capital punishment is necessary in some cases. I do not think a person should be able to keep living in the world if they knowingly took the life of another human being and there is no doubt that they did the crime. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
Thanks Matthew for answering my question regarding the capital punishment, and introducing your hub to me! I enjoyed reading your hub. I like your unassuming writing here. So, voting up and awesome, and useful! I liked especially this sentence of your hub: "Where is the "line" between right and wrong?", and I believe in it! About my question, I realized that I can't reply others' comments more than once! So, I'm going to make the discussion as a hub! Let me read your hub again and carefully, and then I'd like to have a discussion about it.
I forgot to say I like the image, too!

murder is never legal... they call it something else as means of justification... in some cases it is called justifiable homicide, etc.
This is a GREAT hub! The topics you brought up and the way you presented them is a perfect example of the power of the human agenda. What makes one "wrong" and another "right" is solely up to opinion! In the case of murder - opinion is turned into law.
Hi uncle Matt, this is a great hub you have written and I expect more comment on this. I am against abortion 100%. About few months back, people were holding sign about against abortion by one of the hospital. I use to work at an OBGYN office and a young girl as 15 came to the doctor office and asked about abortion. Even though I was only an MA, but the doctor that I worked for asked me to stay and listen. I believe he want me to be the witness if something goes wrong. Well, a week later, she came back with her mother claiming that the doctor was talking her into abortion. Which was opposite from what she spoke about week before. I was the witness and spoke to her mother regarding to that. It has also been dictated and record in the computer. I wrote about abortion on hub few month back but hub have problem with it. lol...never got it published. It is a very serious issue. Woman should never kill their own child. I believe that the child is no reason to be blame but herself. This child has nothing to do with her mistake. NOT EVERY WOMAN CAN HAVE KIDS! I know two lady that want to have a child but she couldn't. so many tries, but no child. It is very depressing and I believe that woman who are able to have a child should be bless. That's just my opinion. Thanks! I vote up and useful! :o)
You have a great heart if you didn't want to see the death penalty for the people who did that to your grand father. I think most people cannot be that forgiving. I have never been in a situation like that and so i would not know how i would feel.
In my opinion [legal baby killings] are totally wrong. A doctor friend once described the whole process of how the doctor performs a [legal baby kill]. It is definitely murder, and people should recognize that.
Lethal injections for the sick people. I do not agree with due to my religious beliefs ... when a person is going through any kind of pain and suffering in life, their sins are being washed, and i think that it is better to go through pain in this world rather than in the hereafter.
This is a most thought provoking hub. I would like to be able to say I agree with all of your points, but I can't. I don't agree with the idea of the "A" word, but, I'm tired of seeing 12 - 16 year old girls on the floor in the bathroom in a pool of their own blood because they tried to do it themselves. Yes, it happens every day. It might be legal for them to go to the clinics, but many don't out of fear of judgment and fear of physical reprisals from parents and often the boy that impregnated them... be it against their will or not and yes, that happens more than you would ever imagine.
I don't like the idea of assisted suicide but I do support it for I have seen too many elderly people die in the most horrific pain that was dragged on so doctors could keep collecting payments even though the patient is begging to be let go. I worked in a nursing home for the better part of a year. I had to leave over things like what I just described. I could not bear to watch it.
As for capitol punishment, again, while it saddens me, I agree in many cases, most especially in the cases of sexual offenders. It has been proven that no rehab has ever worked. I do not want my tax dollars going to support them. They continue to hurt others even when in cages. They just hurt the others in the cage at that point. It's hard and it's horrible but to my way of thinking it's no different than putting down a rabid dog. You may love that dog. At the point it becomes rabid, it can no longer do anything but hurt others. In my opinion, serial rapist and child molesters are exactly the same in that they can no longer do anything but hurt others. None of this is pretty. Sadly, I feel it is correct.
I admire your courage for tackling such an important and controversial issue. The goodness of your heart shines through and shows what a gentle soul you are. Thank you.
What surprises me is how so few doctors refuse to carry out A's and square it with the oath they take to protect life. Capital punishment as legalised murder was my first thought when you posed the question.
@poetvix - i didn't think about the monetary aspects associated with assisted suicide. some good points.
J.S>! Awesome job! I agree with every single bit you posted here. I feel that if the sex offenders go and offend a child, they should lose the part of the body that was used in the assault. People can’t and shouldn’t kill other people, period! You have brought some healing from the depths of my heart, which I needed to heal from. I thank you for this honest hub, and for your courage to write it! :) Blessings!
Very good hub on some very controversial issues! I like the polls. It is always interesting to see how your own opinions compare with others. Here, briefly, are my thoughts, for what they're worth: I do support capital punishment. Some people just need to be removed from society. I know there are those who argue that it is cruel and unusual punishment, but I think life in prison is more cruel. On to “legal baby killings”. There shouldn't be such a thing. It is wrong. Lastly, I think euthanasia should be allowed. Too many people suffer as it is, and I don't think people should have to suffer needlessly towards the end of their lives, just praying to die. I am a Christian and I know some other Christians may find these views at odds with theirs. That would be a whole different series of discussions though! Also, I'm offering these views when I am not in these situations. If I were I might feel different. I haven't walked in those shoes, so I can't say. Thanks for a hub that provides some great food for thought!
When I was three weeks pregnant, and saw a sonogram, I saw the baby's heart beating. I knew it was alive. When I was six weeks pregnant, the heart was no longer beating, and I knew it before the doctor told me...my baby was dead. I don't see how anyone can view something with a beating heart and think that it was not a life that deserved to live. I never had the advantage of viewing another sonogram, but to me, I lost a baby.
I personally believe that a human life is valiable and precious, no matter what stage or age. Great Hub! Condolences on your Grandad - even if it has been a long time since his passing.

I am surprised no one else has commented yet here, as this is a real hot button issue (and you approached it thoughtfully).
I don't necessarily agree with your stance but I do find it logical - especially the contradiction between abortions and prosecuting those who bring harm to people who make abortions possible. Of course, in the twisted minds of those who believe in human rights, they really think that a living being is not a legitimate human until it achieves a certain status. We can take this so far, where it might be possible in the future that kids are not regarded as human beings until they reach 18 - when they are allowed to die for their country but not drink. We live in an upside down world.
I think that mercy killing or euthanasia is not acceptable as a normal or routine resolution, but I am against too much medical intervention when it is clear that the patient's life is being extended but to no positive effect and they do not want to extend their lives this way. I would rather die peacefully than rack up medical bills so I can waste away in a hospital bed at a slower rate - to me that is an abuse of medical practice.
Capital punishment? It falls into the same category I think as refusing heroic measures. There is always a possibility that a cancer patient may recover no matter how bad, or a comatose person my revive 30 years down the road. So it is with criminals who are sentenced to death - they may reform someday. The likelihood is small, and at least in the case of capital punishment, it seems prudent to have a death penalty to discourage future offenders but also to not waste an abnormal amount of resources on someone who is unrepentant and has shown that he will commit the same crime again.
I don't know if I would have the stomach to hit the switch on a frequent basis myself though. It's a tough issue.
Unrelated question: have you been the recipient of discrimination for using the word, "abortion," or do you have another good reason for not using that word?
Great hub (but too short) thanks!
