Why Does America USA Love War? Illustrated Book Review of Addicted To War by Joel Andreas
75
This article is a brief review of the book, "Addicted To War", by Joel Andreas.
I would first like to make a disclaimer:
In no way do I blame US Soldiers for any of the things mentioned in this article. Politicians And Large Corporations are solely responsible for these atrocities and soldiers just do what they are told, and often don't agree with the orders. My father is a Vietnam Veteran, and I pray for and support all US soldiers, and hope that they all come home safe soon!
With that said, let's look at a timeline of all the conflicts the US has engaged in. Remember, the USA is a fairly new country!
Numbers
Between 1898 and 1934, the U.S. Marines invaded:
- Cuba: 4 times
- Nicaragua: 5 times
- Honduras: 7 times
- Dominican Republic: 4 times
- Haiti: 2 times
- Guatemala: once
- Panama: 2 times
- Mexico: 3 times
- Colombia: 4 times
They Really Said That?
"We must march from ocean to ocean...It is the destiny of the white race." -Rep. Giles, MD
"I can still see the butchered women and children lying heaped and scattered all along the crooked gulch...A people's dream died there..." -Black Elk, Spiritual Leader of the Lakota people and survivor of the "Wounded Knee" massacre in S. Dakota
"I firmly believe that when any territory outside the present territorial limits of the United States becomes necessary for our defense or essential for commercial development, we ought to loose no time in acquiring it." Sen. Orville Platt, CT, 1894
"The Philippines are ours forever...the Pacific is Our ocean." Sen. Albert Beveridge, IN, 1900
"I should welcome ANY WAR, for I think this country needs one." -T. Roosevelt. 1897
"We are the ruling race of the world...We will not renounce our part in the mission of our race, trustee, under GOD of the civilization of the world...He has marked us as HIS CHOSEN PEOPLE...that we may administer government among SAVAGE and SENILE PEOPLES." Sen. Beveridge
"I spent 33 years and 4 months in active military service...And during that period I spent most of my time as a high-class muscle man for Big Business, for Wall Street and the Bankers. In short, I was a racketeer, a gangster for capitalism...Thus, I helped make Mexico and especially Tampico safe for American Oil Interests in 1914. I helped make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for the National City Bank boys to collect revenues in. I helped in the Raping of half a dozen Central America Republics for the benefit of Wall Street...I helped Purify Nicaragua for the international banking house of Brown Brothers in 1902-1912. I brought light to the Dominican Republic for American Sugar Interests in 1916. I helped make Honduras right for American Fruit Companies in 1903. In China, 1927, I helped see to it that Standard Oil went on its way unmolested." -General Smedley Butler, reconsidering his role as a Military Leader, after his retirement
"We pray that God might guide us to use [the Nuclear Bombs] in His ways and for His purposes." -President Harry Truman, 1945
"What America is tasting now is something insignificant to what we have tasted for scores of years...Millions of innocent children are being killed as I speak. They are being killed in Iraq without any sins...neither America nor the people who live in it will dream of security before we live it here in Palestine and not before all the infidel armies leave the land of Muhammad..."-Osama bi Laden, Oct. 7, 2001

Facts
- The United States has the largest, richest, and most powerful military in History.
- There is no country too far for the U.S. to attack at any given moment.
- Provoking war for profit causes the U.S. to have shaky relationships all around the world with foreign countries, even our allies.
- A few hundred years ago, the U.S. was a mere settlement of just 13 colonies, still dependent on Europe.
- The U.S. has effectively been at war during its entire existence.
- Propaganda has been used throughout each war to encourage Americans that what we are doing is in the best interest of the world. Realistically, only the corporations (oil, munitions, aerospace technologies, banking and stock markets, etc.) benefit from these wars.
- Middle class Americans pay for these wars through their taxes while big corporations pay little or no tax and profit from the wars.
- The "wealthy one percent" own and regulate everything at our expense. (Think banks charging you interest on your own money when you want to borrow it; you save money in their bank and they make profits but share very little of those profits.)
- The U.S. military, demographically, is spread in every region of the world.
- The U.S. spends more than 3 trillion dollars annually, paid for by tax-paying citizens, for the cause of war. There are millions of starving and homeless children in all of the 50 states.
Summary
The United States is addicted to war for one reason: Personal Profit. It can be argued that these wars were always in the interest of preserving American freedom, but most of the time, that is just propaganda. When another country has what we want, America has no problem invading, killing and stealing to get it. As we have seen, this has been going on since the beginning of U.S. history, and continues through today.
I am not an anti-American and I love my country. I appreciate the military and all those who have fought for my freedom, alive and those who died in honor. I am against the exploitation and depletion of other races and peoples for the pure reason of greed and profit that benefit a minority of the general population.
Great societies such as Ancient Rome and Ancient Greece came to their demise for the same reasons; over-globalization and greed, and a desire to conquer the entire world. As we have seen in history, no society can dominate forever. I really hope that the future of this country realizes that we are repeating history and make the appropriate changes to avoid our collapse.
God Bless America!

I can understand your fear at writing this. Just remember that if people do get outraged it's because they don't want to face the truth about our government. I also love being American but have been called everything from a communist to being stupid and naive. Don't take this down. Let the angry comments come through and take it as a compliment. I'm going to repost this on my fb page. I'll let you know if there's an outcry :)
Hey JS, Good one!
As long as there is no draft we will fight unnecessary wars. We should draft the kids of the people who profit from this constant string of wars.
We used to decry the use of torture by Nazis and Communists, now we have joined that despicable club. I'm ashamed of what my Country, the USA, has become over the last 30 years. War is good for business. Invest your son.
you are a true prophet... good word... have no fear of man who can only kill the body... it is God who holds our eternal destiny!
I don't know if we can compare world war II to the other wars but I do see your point. I have been doing some research on world war I, and wonder if our involvement in that war was really about the oil rich nations in the Ottoman empire. I'm no expert on that period of history, but I can't help but wonder.
Well said, JS. To throw out the obligatory Orwell quote, "The war is not meant to be won. It is meant to be sustained." Further reading in this area would be A People's History of the United States. It gets me that the same people that talk about defending freedom and our way of life have no problem telling gay people they can't get married, limiting dissent, telling people what drugs are okay and what drugs are not (pharmaceuticals-YES! Alcohol and tobacco-yes, to a point. Everything else-Absolutely not!) To say nothing of how we treat the poor, minorities, the elderly and the young.
Well said.Js.Matthew You are true prophet....Your hub is True and mostly people fear from this truth and don't like to hear about it.You are great....You said it very very well...Voted up..Great job
We sacrifice our young for the benefit of a few.
Great article
Wonderful article....
The facts are the facts and another fact is, now America is fighting for peace. It has been shown that wars can be a great boost to the economy and the same could be said for space exploration.
Very nicely researched and put together. Good luck.
I believe America don't love war our politicians do though.
They make so much money from it. I say Rumsfeld and Chaney should be in jail.
War involves in its progress such a train of unforeseen circumstances that no human wisdom can calculate the end; it has but one thing certain, and that is to increase taxes.
Thomas Paine
Ordinary Americans were and are still being made to believe by the goverment that their children were being sent overseas to fight and die in defense of freedom and democracy. No American politician will admit that it is in pursuit of the expansion of the American Empire. But like the empires of the past. We are now in the period of moral decay as witness by the economical dislocation, the decline of the American middle class and political woes brought about by American imperialism. Of course now we call it corporatism
JS, congradulations on joining the human race. We need more of the people in this country to see what you've written and understand the causes of all the ills we suffer in this country. We have a great country but it is run by a bunch of greedy heartless politicians that really don't care about the people. I hope we can wake up the people in time before the "Fall" and save our land. You did a good job laying out, Thanks, Peter
war is a business. that's how i see it. people will do anything for money and that has been proven already. sad. anyway i hate thinking about this stuff. good job though keep it up!
I think one of the most powerful monuments I have ever seen to those who died in the Holocaust is the glass towers in Boston, with the numbers of every registration number of the victims. Seeing all those numbers somehow really shocked me, and reading your timeline of American Conflicts has the same effect.
Perhaps it is the stark simplicity of facts that has such a powerful effect. Facts speak for themselves if we care to listen.
A great hub.
Commendable on your part J.S.Matthew to share this, I admire your conviction to your ideals and principles. More power to you!
HI J.S.
The monument is permanent. I’ve seen it twice and was awed both times. I just looked it up because I couldn’t remember its location, and it’s near the Faneuil Hall on Congress Street. I found a website for it: http://www.nehm.org/intro.html
I love Boston and New England in general by the way, our family has had a couple of holidays there and really enjoyed them.
Interesting summary of war.
Changing dates to fit your thesis is interesting. I like to look at all views. Thank you for sharing your view. You write well.
Not only America indulges in war itself but it immensely interferes in other countries internal matters, especially political crisis or military rule. Today, whatever has Pakistan become, it is only thanks to US and its military aid. Some of its aid on humanitarian ground includes lot of weapons in name of protection of people in a conflicting region. To make matters worse, it plays double role and influence both fighting parties to make peace. Better it sort out its internal matters first, especially its economy.
Love the post.

I think you are brave for writing this hub because it's the truth and most Americans don't want to hear the truth. It's sad to think what our government will do in the name of greed and it's shocking to go through the timeline and see all the lives lost and ruined. I think you did an excellent job. Voted up.
