White Rice

White Rice is one of the most commonly available and eaten foods all over the world. It is fairly easy to grow and is very inexpensive to produce. Rice is a staple food for many cultures and societies and is often a life saving food for impoverished countries.

There are many varieties and colors of rice and rice is actually the seed of the monocot plant species. The basic varieties of rice are:

  • Asian Rice (Oryza sativa)
  • African Rice (Oryza glaberrima)

Rice falls under the food category of Cereal Grains and accounts for about 1/5 of the world's total intake of daily calorie intake. Rice is used in many other products besides human consumption and is also used in the mass production of beer and other alcoholic drinks.

Rice has cultural significance and in many Asian societies it often is a symbol of prosperity, fertility and good luck. This is why people often throw rice at weddings, to signify these symbolic attributes to a newly wedded couple.

This article will discuss traditional Asian White Rice but any rice can be substituted. Differences in rice go beyond color and size. Some rice is firm while other varieties are soft and some rice tends to be stickier than other varieties. Let's look at some great recipes that are best accompanied by rice!
